Temple Visit Etiquette

Wear white or modest clothing

White is the traditional color for temple visits in Sri Lanka. Cover shoulders and knees.

Remove shoes before entering

All temples require bare feet. Carry socks for hot ground. Shoe racks are provided.

Bring offerings (puja vattiya)

Purchase flower and fruit trays from vendors. Coconut oil, camphor, and incense are traditional.

No photography in inner sanctum

Photography is prohibited inside the main shrine rooms. Exterior photos are generally fine.

Don't point feet at statues

Sitting with feet pointed toward Buddha statues or shrines is considered very disrespectful.

Avoid backs to Buddha images

Don't stand or pose with your back to any Buddha statue. Always face the image respectfully.
