Sri Lanka's Sacred Heart
A Tamil harvest festival of thanksgiving to the Sun God, celebrated with sweet pongal, kolam art, and sacred temple offerings.
Thai Pongal is an ancient Tamil harvest festival celebrated in mid-January, marking the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the sun's northward journey (Uttarayan). It is a thanksgiving festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya), Rain God, and cattle.
At the Kataragama temple, the festival takes on special multi-religious significance as both Tamil Hindus and Sinhalese devotees participate in special pujas and offerings. The preparation of sweet pongal (a rice-milk dish) in clay pots is the central ritual of the celebration.
A time of gratitude for the harvest and the gifts of nature. Families come together to thank the divine forces that sustain life and agriculture.
Special pujas are conducted at the Kataragama shrine and the Sella Kataragama temple during this festival, drawing pilgrims from across the island.
