Kiri Vehera
An ancient Buddhist stupa rising 29 metres of white plaster and devotion — the Milk Stupa of Kataragama, revered for over 1,700 years.
Stupa Overview
Kiri Vehera is an impressive white dagoba (stupa) located in Kataragama, standing approximately 29 metres (95 feet) tall. The name translates to "Milk Stupa" in Sinhala, referring to its pristine white appearance that has stood for over seventeen centuries.
Believed to have been built during the reign of King Mahasena (AD 276–303), Kiri Vehera is situated north of the main Kataragama temple complex. According to legend, it marks the very spot where the Buddha meditated during his third visit to Sri Lanka.
Historical Significance
Also associated with King Dutugemunu (161–137 BC), the current Anuradhapura-period structure has been renovated multiple times, each restoration adding to its sacred legacy in Sri Lanka's spiritual geography.
Architectural Features
Classic bell-shaped Sri Lankan stupa design, built of brick and white plaster. The square harmika at the top is crowned by a ceremonial spire. A broad paved circumambulation path surrounds the base.
