Temple Overview

The Kataragama Temple complex, also known as Kataragama Devale or Maha Devale, is one of Sri Lanka's most important religious sites. It's dedicated to the Hindu deity Skanda (also known as Murugan or Kataragama Deviyo), who is revered as a guardian deity.

What makes this temple truly unique is its multi-religious significance. It's venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda people, making it a powerful symbol of religious harmony and coexistence in Sri Lanka.

Historical Significance

The temple has a history dating back thousands of years, with references in ancient chronicles. It gained prominence during the medieval period and has been a major pilgrimage site for centuries, attracting devotees from across South Asia.

Religious Importance

For Hindus, it's a major shrine to Lord Murugan. Buddhists revere it as a guardian deity temple. Muslims associate it with the Sufi saint Khidr. The indigenous Vedda people consider it part of their ancestral heritage.
